What to Hang and What to Fold

Getting this wrong causes real damage — stretched shoulders on knitwear, permanent creases in tailoring. The rule is about weight and structure.

In short

  • Hang anything structured. Tailoring, shirts and coats hold their shape better hanging, and creases fall out.
  • Fold anything knitted. Knit fabric stretches under its own weight.
  • Heavy items need the right hanger. Wire hangers put all the load on two points.

Hang anything structured

Tailoring, shirts and coats hold their shape better hanging, and creases fall out.

Fold anything knitted

Knit fabric stretches under its own weight. Hanging a heavy jumper for a season leaves shoulder points that never come out.

Heavy items need the right hanger

Wire hangers put all the load on two points. Broad wooden or padded hangers spread it and prevent shoulder dents.

The split

The split

  • HANG: shirts, blouses, dresses, tailoring, coats, trousers with a crease
  • FOLD: jumpers, cardigans, t-shirts, jeans, activewear, underwear
  • HANG on broad hangers: anything with structured shoulders
  • FOLD flat: anything beaded or heavily embellished
  • Never hang: knitwear of any weight

Frequently asked questions

Should jeans be hung or folded?

Folded. Denim is heavy and hanging it by the waistband distorts the shape, and folded jeans take less space regardless.

Why should knitwear be folded?

Knit fabric stretches under its own weight. A jumper hung for a season develops permanent shoulder points.
