A Summer Capsule Wardrobe

Summer is the easiest season to build a capsule for and the one people most often overbuy. Heat removes layering from the equation, which means fewer pieces do more, not more pieces doing less.

In short

  • Start with the fabrics, not the pieces. Linen, cotton and lyocell breathe; polyester does not.
  • Two bottoms carry the season. One pair of light trousers and one pair of shorts or a skirt covers almost every summer day.
  • Plan for the cold indoors. Air conditioning is why a summer capsule needs one real layer.

Summer is the easiest season to build a capsule for and the one people most often overbuy. Heat removes layering from the equation, which means fewer pieces do more, not more pieces doing less.

Start with the fabrics, not the pieces

Linen, cotton and lyocell breathe; polyester does not. In genuine heat the fibre matters more than the cut, because a loose polyester shirt is still hotter than a fitted linen one.

Two bottoms carry the season

One pair of light trousers and one pair of shorts or a skirt covers almost every summer day. The temptation is to buy five; the reality is you wear two.

Plan for the cold indoors

Air conditioning is why a summer capsule needs one real layer. A light cardigan or overshirt earns more wear than any extra t-shirt would.

A 14-piece summer capsule

  • 3 t-shirts in your base neutrals
  • 1 long-sleeve linen shirt, for sun as much as for cool
  • 1 pair of light trousers
  • 1 pair of shorts or a skirt
  • 2 dresses that work day and evening
  • 1 light layer for air conditioning
  • 1 pair of sandals
  • 1 pair of trainers
  • 1 swimsuit
  • 1 hat
  • 1 tote

Frequently asked questions

How many pieces does a summer capsule need?

Around 12 to 16, excluding underwear and swimwear. Summer needs fewer than winter because almost nothing layers.

What colours work best for summer?

Light neutrals reflect heat and hide sweat marks better than mid-tones. White, stone, sand and light blue all work; mid-grey is the worst offender for showing sweat.
