The point of folding well is not neatness. It is that every item is visible without disturbing the others.
File-fold, do not stack
Folded items standing vertically on edge in a drawer means you see all of them at once. Stacking hides everything but the top three.
Fold to the drawer depth
The correct fold is whatever makes the item exactly as tall as the drawer is deep. There is no universal number of folds.
Knitwear folds, never hangs
Hanging stretches the shoulders permanently. This is the one folding rule that prevents actual damage.
The method
The method
- Lay the garment flat and smooth it
- Fold the sleeves in to make a rectangle
- Fold in thirds lengthwise
- Fold in half or thirds again, to your drawer depth
- Stand it on its edge in the drawer
- Fill the drawer front to back so items support each other
