A Capsule Wardrobe for a Cold Climate

Below about -5°C, dressing stops being a style question and becomes an engineering one. The capsule still works, but the constraints are physical.

Below about -5°C, dressing stops being a style question and becomes an engineering one. The capsule still works, but the constraints are physical.

Three layers, and the middle one matters most

Insulation is trapped air. The mid layer is where that happens, and it is the layer people most often skimp on.

Cotton is the wrong base layer

It holds moisture against skin and then conducts heat away. Merino or synthetic only, next to skin.

Extremities decide comfort

Hands, feet and head lose heat fastest. A good hat and proper gloves do more than a heavier coat.

Where to focus

Where to focus

  • 2 merino base layers, top and bottom
  • 2 mid layers — fleece or heavy wool
  • 1 insulated, windproof outer
  • Insulated waterproof boots
  • Wool socks, several pairs
  • A hat that covers the ears
  • Gloves rated for the actual temperature

Frequently asked questions

How many layers for a cold climate?

Three: a moisture-managing base, an insulating mid, and a windproof outer. Adding a fourth thin layer beats making one layer thicker.

Is down or synthetic better?

Down is warmer for its weight; synthetic keeps insulating when wet. In a cold, wet climate synthetic wins.
