How to Store Accessories

Accessories are small, numerous and easy to lose, which is why they end up tangled in a drawer and unworn.

In short

  • Visible or forgotten, no middle ground. Anything in an opaque box is out of rotation.
  • Jewellery needs to not tangle. Chains knot if stored loose.
  • Bags lose shape when hung by the strap. Store them upright on a shelf, stuffed lightly, rather than hanging from a hook.

Accessories are small, numerous and easy to lose, which is why they end up tangled in a drawer and unworn.

Visible or forgotten, no middle ground

Anything in an opaque box is out of rotation. Hooks, trays and shallow drawers keep things in use.

Jewellery needs to not tangle

Chains knot if stored loose. Individual hooks or compartments are the only reliable fix.

Bags lose shape when hung by the strap

Store them upright on a shelf, stuffed lightly, rather than hanging from a hook.

By type

By type

  • Scarves — hung over a rail or rolled in a shallow drawer
  • Belts — rolled in a drawer, or hung by the buckle
  • Jewellery — individual hooks for chains, trays for the rest
  • Bags — upright on a shelf, lightly stuffed, in cloth bags
  • Hats — stacked crown-up or on a shelf, never crushed
  • Sunglasses — cases, in a tray by the door

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop necklaces tangling?

Individual hooks. Anything stored loose in a shared box will knot, and untangling repeatedly damages the chain.

How should I store handbags?

Upright on a shelf, lightly stuffed to hold shape, in a breathable cloth bag. Never hanging by the strap long term.
